'Dancing with the Stars' Cast: Before They Were Stars

Yahoo Contributor Network

Ever wonder what the "Dancing with the Stars" regulars used to do before their "DWTS" fame? From judge Bruno Tonioli's 80s music video stint to Tom Bergeron's Daily Number duties, we've got the skinny on the past lives of the "DWTS" cast.

First up, he may be the host with the most, but Tom Bergeron paid his dues before landing primo hosting gigs like "America's Funniest home Videos, "Hollywood Squares" and "Dancing With the Stars." Back in the late 1980s, one of his many duties on WBZ TV in Boston was hosting the station's "Lottery Live" segment.

Judge Bruno Tonioli may be known for his risque critiques on "DWTS," but back in 1983 he was worthy of some critiquing himself. Tonioli was one of the male dancers in Elton John's video for the song "I'm Still Standing." (You can check out the video here.) We'll give his 80s dancing prowess a 10, but let's just hope he retired those red pants!

"DWTS" judge Carrie Ann Inaba has something in common with a judge from another competition show: American Idol's Jennifer Lopez. Although the two weren't BFFs, in the early 1990s they did work together as Fly Girls on the television show "In Living Color."

And before she donned glamorous evening gowns for her co-hosting spot on "DWTS," Brooke Burke went heavy metal as a co-host on the CBS rock singing competition shows "Rock Star: INXS" and "Rock Star: Supernova." Her partner for her "Rock Star" stint was hard rock guitarist Dave Navarro-- about as opposite from Tom Bergeron as you can get.

While Americans know him as the curmudgeonly judge on "DWTS," Len Goodman has been a TV judge well before that, doling out scores on the British dance comp, "Strictly Come Dancing" (Bruno Tonioli is also a judge on the BBC show.)

And while he's technically a retired ballroom dancer, Corky Ballas (dad of Mark !) was brought out of retirement twice to compete on "DWTS." He was partnered first with Cloris Leachman in Season 7 and then with Florence Henderson in Season 11, making him the go-to partner for the over-70 set. But way back in his dance school teacher days, Ballas not only trained his son, but he also trained future dance pros Derek Hough and his sister, Julianne Hough. (The Hough kids even lived with Ballas and his wife!) His training paid off: Mark Ballas and the Hough's have won 7 out of the show's 12 seasons.
