Connecticut School Shooting: Celebs Express Heartbreak, Prayers
The horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that took the lives of 28 people, 20 of those being children from the ages of 5 to 10, has left the entire nation heartbroken today. And some celebrities, including parents Jessica Alba, Hilary Duff, Christina Applegate, and Kevin Bacon have expressed their sorrow, shock, and disbelief through tweets that offered up prayers and condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
It’s been reported that the gunman is 20-year-old Adam Lanza, whose mother Nancy was a either a teacher or an aide at the elementary school, located just 65 miles northeast of New York City. After the rampage, which began in the school’s main office and continued on in a kindergarten classroom, Adam Lanza was found dead, although it’s unclear at this time if he took his own life. Police have also discovered the body of an unknown adult at the Lanza family home. ABC News reports it is Nancy Lanza.
After the tragedy, a tearful President Barack Obama addressed the nation. “We've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years and each time I hear the news, I react not as a president but as anybody else would as a parent,” he began, before getting choked up. “And that was especially true today. I know there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do. The majority of those who died today were children. Beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them: birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own … This evening, Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter, and we'll tell them that we love them, and we'll remind each other how deeply we love one another. But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight, and they need all of us, right now. In the hard days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as Americans, and I will do everything in my power as President to help.”
