Celebrities Mourn 'The Jeffersons' Star Sherman Hemsley

Actor Sherman Hemsley, who amused TV audiences for 11 years as George Jefferson , "The Jeffersons" acid-tongued businessman with the distinctive strut, died July 24 in El Paso, Texas. He was 74 years old. Although best-recognized as the surly Jefferson who "moved on up" to a New York City luxury apartment thanks to a chain of successful dry cleaning businesses, Hemsley also had a starring role in the late 80s sitcom "Amen".
