Celeb Trend Report: Alternative Engagement Rings

"American Idol" fans either loved or hated Ace Young's proposal to his girlfriend of two years, Diana DeGarmo, on the finale of season 11 last week. Mainly, people thought it was tacky that he named the jeweler during the proposal, signaling that he probably got the ring for free.

Still, the ring is actually pretty beautiful and Young was in on the design from day one.

"A month ago, she said, 'Gold needs to come back,'" the season five finalist told People magazine after the finale. "I was like, 'I agree,' so mental note. Her favorite thing is a sunflower and she loves yellow, so one of our dear friends [helped me] put together a ring that has a yellow diamond, a gold band and two smaller diamonds on the side that are clear, so it's like a sunflower."

The ring, designed by David Webb, features a one-carat yellow center stone with two side diamonds weighing in at .2 carats. We might not like the product placement, but we do love that celebs are opting for unique designs when proposing marriage to their significant others.

Who else is proposing with custom designs?

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan

Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg celebrated the social network's IPO last weekend by marrying his longtime girlfriend, Priscilla Chan, in a surprise ceremony. As for the ring? He might be a billionaire, but he only spent $25,000 on a ruby engagement ring for his now-wife, according to the Daily Mail.

Hey, we appreciate that he's frugal with his cash. As for Chan? We're sure she's okay with it, too.

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth

Hollywood agent Jim Toth proposed to now-wife Reese Witherspoon with a huge, four-carat Ashoka ring. Ashoka diamonds are rare -- less than 10 percent of diamonds are of the quality to be cut in this shape, according to ring designer Eve Goldberg, co-owner of William Goldberg Diamond Corporation.

"It's a very elegant cut and it has an old feel to it," Goldberg told People after the couple got engaged in December 2010. "In the past year, the retro look in diamonds has been very popular."

She must be happy with it: The couple is expecting their first child together within the next few months.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are finally sealing the deal on their seven-year relationship with a custom engagement ring designed by Hollywood jeweler Robert Procop under close supervision by Pitt himself.

"Brad was always heavily involved, overseeing every aspect of the creative design evolution. The side diamonds are specially cut to encircle her finger. Each diamond is of the highest gem quality," Procop told The Hollywood Reporter in April.

As for the actual wedding date? We'll probably be waiting for awhile.
