Gwyneth Paltrow at the 2012 Oscars

Gwyneth Paltrow may have subconsciously wished to signal her super powers when she turned up at the Oscars this week wearing a white cape over her Tom Ford dress. Overshadowed by Angelina Jolie's protruding leg and Jennifer Lopez's alleged nip slip, the actress's cape caused a mini-stir among media fashionistas fascinated by the retro accessory.

The pale beauty admitted to channeling a former first lady in choosing the classic ensemble. "I saw a pic of Jackie O in a white dress with a cape and it's been a while since anyone's worn a cape except for Superman," Paltrow said on "The Chew."

The mother of two also credited her daughter with her potentially cheesy choice, stating Apple wanted her to have a "fashion moment" at the televised ceremonies viewed by millions.

For the most part, the fashion stunt seemed to be a success with the press. "It takes a real super star to pull off wearing a cape, but we think Gwyneth may have done it!" wrote Nicole Eggenberger of OK magazine.

Fans liked the haute couture cape, too. In a fashion face-off between her outfit and that of Shailene Woodley, the almost-40-year-old overwhelmingly beat out George Clooney's daughter in the "The Descendants" by an almost three to one ratio. Critics of the younger actress's dress said she should have gone for a sexy vs. senior citizen look.

Despite overwhelmingly favorable reviews, mockers of the multi-media star couldn't resist getting their digs in about the symbolism of her outer garment. "Gwyneth Paltrow came to the Oscars wearing a CAPE," snarked a blogger for Celebitchy. "'Goop' isn't just her nickname and her specially-made newsletter for peasants -- it's also her superhero name. Dame Goop, with a cape!"

In addition to being an actress and country singer, the wife of Cold Play rocker Chris Martin has her own blog called GOOP in which she hands out advice on everything from high fashion to healthy food. In her most recent issue titled "Ready for Spring," the "Glee" guest star modeled spring fashions for her minions, featuring such must-haves as an orange dress, cropped jacket, gathered skirt, leather pencil skirt, mini jump suit and boyfriend jeans.

Given her penchant for Superman-like capes, one wonders if Paltrow performed her outfit changes for the fashion spread in a phone booth a la the super hero's alter ego, Clark Kent.
