The woman with one of the best bods in Hollywood must have decided to dress up for Halloween early when she showed up at a star-studded event Saturday in a marigold-colored Gucci dress that looked more like a flower costume than couture.
How else could you explain the unflattering smock that made it look like the "There's Something About Mary" star was hiding her figure flaws?
The event was the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's 2012 Art + Film gala honoring Ed Ruscha and Stanley Kubrick. Though she may have meant to make a dramatic fashion statement with her bright yellow dress, Diaz succeeded only in showing how a shapeless cut and bulky fabric can camouflage the most fabulous physique.
Aside from the frumpy fit, the floral appliques decorating the neckline looked more like something you'd find on a six-year-old's Easter dress, and the bell sleeves just looked silly.
Fortunately, the SoCal native could at least show off her mile-long legs, and her black ankle-cuff Gucci sandals helped mitigate an otherwise unforgivable fashion felony.
Ironically, "The Fighter" star Amy Adams dazzled at the same event in a simple but elegant floor-length gown that was the same marigold color as Diaz's disaster.
The "My Best Friend's Wedding" star usually looks best when she stays away from horrid hues and too-fussy fashions. In 2009, she had another fail when she wore a "Pepto abysmal Chanel Haute Couture frock." Not only was the color sickeningly sweet, the taffeta fabric screamed SENIOR PROM.
The night before the LACMA bash, the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" star's more casual mini-dress looked busy next to Reese Witherspoon's solid blue shift at the opening of a new Rag & Bone shop on Melrose. The abstract paisley pattern looked like it escaped from a man's tie, and Diaz's forgot-to-brush-my-hair do did nothing to detract from the overall mess.
Finally, no hit piece on the "Bad Teacher" star's fashion crimes would be complete without a look at her 2000 Oscar dress, a skin-tight black ultra-mini with shocking pink fishnet stockings and shiny black high-heeled boots. The daring ensemble made the "Charlie's Angels" actress look more desperate than dishy.
Like a stopped clock, though, the new Gwyneth BFF sometimes gets her outfit right. Among her best red carpet nights was the 2010 Academy Awards when she wore a shimmery gold Oscar de la Renta gown. The flowy, yet flattering, dress made the blue-eyed beauty look like she could be an Oscar herself.
