Bristol Palin Gay Marriage Backlash: Can Her Career Survive Another Controversy?

Yahoo Contributor Network

Bristol Palin slammed Barack Obama's stance on gay marriage with a blog rant that has sparked quite a social media backlash.

In the rant Bristol makes a few jokes about "Glee" and "Dora the Explorer," but it's probably this line that's really irking a lot of people: "we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids' worldview." It's not hard to see why some celebs have spoken out against Bristol's stance - after all, she's not raising her son Trigg in a mother/father home. "Jersey Shore" star JWoww pointed out the problem with her statement by tweeting, "Bristol should keep her uneducated ignorant mouth shut. If Ur living in the past u wouldn't have a kid w/out marriage #hypocrite. It's 2012!"

However, as angry as some people are at Bristol, it's very doubtful that we've seen the last of her - she's already weathered plenty of controversies.

One of the biggest controversies concerning Bristol is the money she made as an abstinence ambassador. Even though she obviously didn't practice abstinence as a teen, she was paid over $300,000 to preach to kids about not having sex before marriage. Around the same time that this news broke, Bristol debuted a brand new face. This prompted some people to wonder if she had spent some of that abstinence money on getting plastic surgery, but Bristol later explained that she had undergone a medical procedure to properly align her jaw and teeth.

Bristol was probably thinking that her new face would look great for the BIO Channel reality show she was filming that never saw the light of day. The cameras captured a patron of the bar she was at approaching her and calling Sarah Palin a "whore." No one can criticize Bristol for getting upset, but the insult she chose to hurl back at the man was unfortunate - she responded by saying, "Is it because you're a homosexual?" She then told the man that she could tell that he was gay.

But another of Bristol's reality show appearances caused an even bigger controversy. In 2010 she kept advancing week after week on "Dancing with the Stars," despite being an "underwhelming" performer. This led to speculation that Sarah Palin supporters were rallying behind her to vote her through simply to spite all the Palin detractors. Unfortunately she didn't win the competition, and her fans weren't around to start a letter-writing campaign to get the BIO Channel to air her reality show.

But all these controversies certainly haven't kept Bristol down - in fact, she's set to star in another reality show on Lifetime entitled "Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp" later this year.

There are a lot of celebs who get rewarded for being controversial, and it seems that Bristol is becoming one of them whether we like it or not.
