Berlin: Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, Shia LaBeouf, Zooey Deschanel Join ‘Kasbah’

In a pre-Berlin announcement, Kate Hudson, Danny McBride, Shia LaBeouf and Zooey Deschanel have joined Bruce Willis and Bill Murray in the indie comedy “Rock the Kasbah.”

The move may put to rest speculation that LaBeouf was retiring. The actor said earlier this month in a tweet that he was retiring from all public life because of “attacks against his artistic integrity.”

Bill Block’s QED will launch foreign sales at the European Film Market. Production will start in June with Barry Levinson directing from Mitch Glazer’s script.

Block, Venture Forth’s Jacob Pechenik, Shangri-La Entertainment’s Steve Bing and Glazer will produce. Brian Grazer and Tom Freston are exec producing.

Story centers on a has-been rock manager who takes his last remaining client on a USO tour of Afghanistan. When he finds himself in Kabul, abandoned, penniless and without his passport, he discovers a young girl with an extraordinary voice and manages her through Afghanistan’s version of “American Idol.”

“I couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect team of comic actors to round out this wickedly funny and heartfelt film,” Levinson said.

Variety reported in September that Murray had come on board.

QED recently completed shooting on World War II tank tale “Fury,” starring Brad Pitt. Its Berlin slate includes “Time Out of Mind,” starring Richard Gere and directed by Oren Moverman; “Term Life,” directed by Peter Billingsley and starring Vince Vaughn and Hayley Steinfeld; and “The Family Fang,” directed by Jason Bateman and starring Bateman and Nicole Kidman.
