Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

A recent lawsuit filed by the godmother to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's daughter Shiloh revealed a little known secret about the early days of the Hollywood couple's secret love affair.

During the filming of "Mr. & Mr. Smith" -- when Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston -- he and Jolie took method acting to the extreme and carried their on-screen romance over into real life. They attempted to keep their trysts a secret, with the "Salt" star using the name "Pocahontas" when she checked into a hotel with her paramour.

In what is obviously more than a coincidence, the historical Pocahontas was involved with a man named John Smith, and though the two did not have a real-life romance, fictional accounts of the pair -- such as the 1995 Disney movie "Pocahontas" -- turned them into a British-Native American version of Romeo and Juliet.

Stunt double Eunice Huthart, who lived with Jolie in Los Angeles during the filming of the 2005 movie about a married couple who were secretly hired to kill each other, recently filed a lawsuit against News Corp.. She claimed her roommate left messages on her cell phone that were hacked by the Rupert Murdoch-owned media company, whose tabloid The Sun outed the couple's illicit affair. Jolie reportedly used the code name Pocahontas in one of the voicemails.

In an interesting twist, the historical Pocahontas heroically saved the life of John Smith -- the same name as Pitt's character in the movie -- and Pitt has often alluded to his life being saved by Jolie.

Most recently, the "World War Z" actor spoke disparagingly about his life during the time he was married to the former "Friends" star. "For a long time I thought I did too much damage -- drug damage. I was a bit of a drifter," he told Esquire in May. "But then I got burnt out and felt that I was wasting my opportunity. It was a conscious change. ... This was about a decade ago. It was an epiphany."

That time frame neatly coincides with when Pitt met Jolie, whose vastly different personality and lifestyle could be viewed as saving the actor from sleepwalking through his own life. With their six children and humanitarian causes, the Jolie-Pitts are more known for parenting and do-gooding than partying with pals.

Pitt's recent comment echoed another dig he made in 2011 about his life when he was married to Aniston. "I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out. It started feeling pathetic," he told Parade. "I think my marriage had something to do with it; trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't."

Now engaged to Jolie, Pitt speaks of his fiance with respect if not reverence. He recently called her "heroic" for having a double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer, a word he might also use to describe her saving him from his former dead-end life.
