Almost 30: Amy Winehouse and Female Singers Who Died Too Young

September 14 would have been Amy Winehouse's 28th birthday. The singer passed away on July 23, 2011 in London and never saw the age of 30. Winehouse, like some other female musicians who died before reaching 30, gave music their all and gifted the world with their voices.

It took painter Grandma Moses most of her life to find her artistic mojo. The famous self-taught artist did not discover her craft until she was 78. Lucky for us the talented Winehouse found her voice early and her star burned brightly before she passed. We could mourn what could have been, or we could celebrate the musical legacies these phenomenal women left behind.

Amy Winehouse, 27

The birth anniversary of critically-acclaimed singer Amy Winehouse will come and go, but we'll always have her music. She brought softness to an edgy life, and made everything sound beautiful, much like jazz diva Billie Holiday. Winehouse could fuse different musical genres and cook up a delicious sound.

Aaliyah, 22

The young R&B and hip-hop sensation had barely started her party when she was killed when a small plane crashed after takeoff. Although she was young she earned fame quickly and it only took a few months for "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number," went platinum. Not only was this sultry singer a singing force, she was also a movie star.

She started with "Romeo Must Die" but is most memorable as Queen Akasha in Anne Rice's "Queen of the Damned." Before Robert Pattinson and the Cullen family took over as the hottest vampires around, Rice thrilled us with " The Vampire Chronicles series ," with key vampires brought to life on screen by sexy actors Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.

Selena, 23

Jennifer Lopez understood the importance of telling Selena's tale. Selena Quintanilla-Perez was a busy child and teen singing Latin music with the family band. The young star was wildly popular and was tragically shot by the president of her fan club. Lopez took on the role of Selena in the 1997 movie, "Selena," which brought her critical nods and a shortcut to the hearts of the American public.

Janis Joplin, 27

It's ironic that Winehouse's mom is named Other unnerving similarities: both Winehouse and Joplin struggled with addiction and won accolades including Grammy Awards. In 2005 Joplin was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

* Lisa Nicole Lopes (Left Eye) of TLC was a a month away from her 31st birthday when she died in a car crash.
