Adrian Peterson's Son, 2, Dead After Alleged Abuse by Another Man: Report

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson suffered a huge loss on Friday, Oct. 11, after his 2-year-old son died of injuries he reportedly sustained at the hands of his mother's new boyfriend.

According to NBC affiliate KARE 11, the young boy died on Friday afternoon after being in critical condition since Wednesday, Oct. 9, following the alleged assault.

TMZ confirmed that the boy is not Adrian Peterson Jr., whom the athlete is often pictured with.

"All I can say is, we are asking for prayers and for respect for our family as we deal with this tragic situation," the boy's grandfather, Nelson Peterson, told The Pioneer Press.

Adrian was absent from Vikings practice on Thursday, but returned Friday. Prior to his son's death, he told reporters at the time that he was still planning on playing in the Sunday game against the Carolina Panthers at the Metrodome.

"I should start off by saying I really appreciate all the support that I've been receiving from fans, the Vikings organization," he said. "You know, football is something I will always fall back on. It gets me through tough times. Just being around the guys here, that's what I need in my life, guys supporting me, and just being able to go out and play this game I love."

"Things that I go through, I've said a thousand times, it helps me play this game to a different level," he continued. "I'm able to kind of release a lot of my stress through this sport, so that's what I plan on doing."

The athlete has not yet announced whether his plans have changed since this latest development.
