Adele is catching some heat for using her middle finger at an awards show.

At the 2012 Brit Awards in London this week, pop singer Adele shocked audiences when she spontaneously flipped the bird while on stage, according to Us Weekly.

The reason behind Adele's uncharacteristically crude middle finger flipping? She was cut off by producers as she accepted her award for Best British Album.

The 23-year-old singer told the BBC: "I flung the middle finger. That was for the suits at the Brit Awards, not my fans. I'm sorry if I offended anyone but the suits offended me."

But Adele's middle finger flip is just the latest among a long line of celebs who have let their finger do the talking. Remember these?

Johnny Cash

It was a picture that was definitely worth a thousand words. A photo of the legendary singer Johnny Cash flipping the bird has been called "probably the most ripped-off photograph in the history of the world" by photographer Jim Marshall. According to Collector's Weekly, Marshall's shot of Johnny Cash giving the middle finger to the camera was taken during Cash's 1969 performance at San Quentin Prison. Marshall prompted Cash to flip him the bird by saying, "John, let's do a shot for the warden.'"

During the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show, rapper M.I.A. flipped 100 million viewers the bird while performing the song "Give Me All Your Luvin'" with Madonna. The NFL wasted no time in issuing an apology for M.I.A.'s inappropriate gesture - and even the Material Girl appeared blindsided. In a radio interview with On Air With Ryan Seacrest, Madge said, "I was really surprised. I didn't know anything about it. I wasn't happy about it… It's such a teenager…irrelevant thing to do. There was such a feeling of love and unity there, what was the point? It was just out of place."

Jackie Mason

The year was 1964 and comedian Jackie Mason was doing his stand up act on "The Ed Sullivan Show" when it was interrupted by a televised statement from President Lyndon Johnson. After President Johnson's message, Mason allegedly stuck up his middle finger as he went back on camera and was fired that night by Sullivan. But according to the Deseret News, the comedian later sued, claiming the incident was a misunderstanding and saying, "I deny that any gesture I employed on Mr. Sullivan's show was either obscene or vulgar."

Iggy Pop

The Stooges front man's 2010 induction into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame was a memorable one. According to the Los Angeles Times, amid a ceremony that included inductees such as ABBA, the Hollies, Genesis and Jimmy Cliff, Iggy Pop gave the crowd an eyeful.

"This thing is heavy," the singer said of his new statue, before flipping two middle fingers to the crowd.

Pop gave the crowd an earful too. When asked if he had donated any memorabilia to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in honor of his induction, the rocker replied, "I told them where to buy all the stuff I sold for drugs in the '70s."
