Ah the parties.... the dresses.... the hoopla.... It must be Oscar season!

It's that time of the year when the excitement of the Super Bowl is behind us and the cool weather has driven most of the country indoors. We turn to the new crop of celebrity filled awards shows to give us a break from the winter doldrums with their over-the-top indulgence.

As the celebrities hit the red carpet, they are typically accompanied by their spouse or current romantic partner. On occasion, they are accompanied by an entourage of managers, agents, and PR folks. On some rare occasions, they couple up with their fellow celebrity friends that may leave us scratching our heads wondering how in the world they ended up together.

Here are a few of the surprise Oscar celebrity BFFs that left us shaking our heads:

Jake Gyllenhaal and 50 Cent: The "Brokeback Mountain" star and the rapper cut a dapper picture at the 2011 Oscar Vanity Fair after party. The Oscar winner was on hand to present at the annual awards while the rapper was just enjoying the night's festivities.

Liv Tyler and Steven Tyler: He's the over-the-top rock star who is currently serving as a judge on "American Idol". She's his more conservative actress daughter. Together they made an amazing couple on the red carpet at the 2011 Academy Awards.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz: They were little too close for comfort at the Vanity Fair after party last year. Paltrow was enjoying her career resurgence following her successful stint on "Glee" and in the film "Country Strong". Diaz was partying the night away.

Tori Spelling and Elton John: They may not be BFFs yet, but a run in at last year's after parties left the reality mom hoping for a playdate for their kids. "O-M-G! Sir Elton John just came ovr 2 R table & talked 2 me! Wow," she tweeted. "I congratulated him&David on the twins Is it wrong 2 hope 4 a playdate?"

Kim Kardashian and Kelly Osbourne: They may both be celebrity kids, but the pairing seemed a bit odd at Elton John's after party last year. It would seem that the reality star encompasses just about everything Kelly mocks on E!'s "Fashion Police".
