'50 Shades' Taps Screenwriter

The Next '50 Shades'? 'Twilight' Fic Gets Deal

The first step towards getting 50 Shades of Grey on the big screen happened today as Universal and Focus Features announced Kelly Marcel has been hired to write the screenplay!

Marcel, who co-created Fox's short-lived series Terra Nova, also wrote the screenplay for Saving Mr. Banks, which is currently in production starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.

"Kelly's work demonstrates her flawless structural technique and passionate commitment to emotion, humor and depth of character which is particularly visible in the celebrated screenplay for the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks," said the film's producer, Michael De Luca. "We were all taken with the depth and passion of Kelley's engagement with the characters and world E L James has created and we knew she was the right person to augment our Fifty Shades family,” added Dana Brunetti, another producer.

An interesting tidbit about Kelly: She is the co-artistic director of "The Bad Dog Theater Company," which was founded in 2010 alongside the Tom Hardy. Did someone just gain the inside track on the role of Christian Grey?
