5 Questions for David Cross

5 Questions for David Cross

The first season of David Cross' absurd and insane (both compliments) The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret defined cult hit. But with Jon Hamm joining Will Arnett for the second season, it is poised to break through that invisible barrier. And if snagging one of TV's hottest actors (in every sense of the word) doesn't help, then the recently announced Arrested Development movie should certainly attract a few million more eyes to one of TV's smartest and most irreverent comedies!

Insider.com: Things looked bad when we left Todd at the end of season one. Where do we pick up?
David Cross: Season two picks up literally the second after season one ended and it gets almost exponentially worse for him.

Insider: How is that possible?
David: I'm not trying to be difficult or coy but because of the nature of this show, teasing too much would ruin too many things about this season. But just think about where we ended -- with Todd saying, "Hey, wait a second, why is Dave getting into a chauffeured limousine, coming out of the ambassador party and not sounding the same way?"

Insider: Does the show utilize the same format, with the opening putting Todd in the same scenario?
David: Yes. There is a different flash-forward in season two but it utilizes the same construct from season one. This week starts with Todd in full North Korean officer's outfit and he's surrounded by armed soldiers in a military bunker with his fingers above a red button.

WATCH Jon Hamm's 'Excellent' Cameo

Insider: Lots of guest stars come in this season, including Jon Hamm. Was that a case of you reaching out or him coming to you?
David: Well, IFC kicked in some extra money for a second season, and asked if there was any way I could write a role for one of my celebrity friends. Of which I have many [laughs]. The writers and I thought of Jon Hamm and came up with this idea, so I emailed him – the whole process took seven minutes before he signed on. There's a twist to his whole story that I won't give away but he was totally up for any and all of it.

Insider: In between seasons one and two, the Arrested Development movie was announced. Did that help or hurt in terms of how many AD questions you'd get from fans?
David: It quelled the questions for a brief amount of time but now people are excited -- and I'm excited for their excitement. And I share it. But I still have the same answer: I know little. I just know what the idea for the movie is, it's f***ing brilliant and I can't wait to do it.
