2013 Oscars: Best and Worst Black Gowns on the Red Carpet

Black gowns are standard on the red carpet, and at the 2013 Oscars many ladies chose to wear the color during the biggest night in Hollywood. The problem with wearing black is that, if not done correctly, it could come across as horribly bland and boring. The objective: wear a black gown that's sexy, classy and evokes a positive reaction. Out of all the black gowns at the Oscars, which were the best and worst?

Kelly Osbourne

The "Fashion Police" co-host stepped out in a black Tony Ward Couture halter gown consisting of shimmering embellishments across the bodice that sprinkled down over her hips. Dangling earrings and a black clutch finished off the look. She looked pretty, but it was certainly nothing "Wow" inducing. It's also about time she got rid of that purple hair.

Giuliana Rancic

This is yet another yawn-inducing black frock. She wore a strapless Rafael Cennamo gown that she paired with flat hair, red lipstick and a plain black clutch. The only noteworthy thing about her look is the folded fabric detailing on the front of the dress, and even that's not worth talking about more than a mere mention.

Kristin Chenoweth

The co-host of the Oscars pre-show sparkled in a black Tony Ward gown that's much better than the Ward gown Osbourne wore, but it still wasn't great. The dress had a sheer panel at the neckline, a white embellished design on the bodice and a fabulous amount of sparkling over the hip area. Her hair was in a bun for the occasion and she opted for simple accessories with a couple of rings, stud earrings and a black clutch.

Samantha Barks

And the award for the most boring black dress at the Oscars goes to - Miss Barks. The black Valentino gown had a plunging neckline, which she accentuated with a pendant necklace and a slightly messy updo, and while it looked great on her, it was flat out uninteresting. The Oscars are an event where you take chances, go all out with fashion and make the most out of the best gowns that top designers have to offer, and Samantha failed to deliver.

Nicole Kidman

Although Nicole rarely disappoints on the red carpet, she certainly did at the Oscars. Her black and gold L'Wren Scott gown looked like an oil slick with gold snails stuck in it. The updo with messy tendrils hanging down wasn't anything to be excited about either. Such a disappointment from someone who is capable of so much more.

The new mom walked the red carpet in a short sleeve black Jenny Packham gown that had sheer sleeves and black beading from top-to-bottom. Her hair was half up and she sported smokey eyes. It's nothing we haven't seen before from her, but she still looked beautiful. The singer looked super-tall at the event and it's no wonder as to why. Although she's typically 5'9, at the event she stated she was 6'1 with her heels on. She walked away with an Oscar for Best Original Song.

Sandra Bullock

The actress looked incredible in a black and silver exquisitely beaded body-hugging Elie Saab gown that had a slight train and cap sleeves. She wore her hair straight and sleek and although it would have looked better in an updo, it still worked. Harry Winston jewels and a Swarovski clutch completed the look. She definitely gets the award for the best black gown at the event.

Sound off! Who gets your vote for the best and worst black gowns at the 2013 Oscars?
