Esperanza Spalding upsets Justin Bieber and Drake for the Best New Artist Grammy

The 2011 Grammy Awards will go down in the books as one of the most shocking in the 53 years since its inception.

And of course -- who better to start off the night than Lady Gaga. The "Born This Way" singer arrived on the red carpet in an egg. Yes, the singer was "incubating" before her "birth" during her performance of her new single during the show.

But Lady Gaga and other power players -- like Justin Bieber -- were not the clear winners of the night.

Best New Artist: And the Award Does Not Go to Justin Bieber

The Grammy Awards are known for nominating both well-known and not-so-well-known artists in some of the categories, like Best New Artist.

This year was no exception -- mega-stars like Justin Bieber and Drake against more independent artists Mumford & Sons, Florence & the Machine and Esperanza Spalding.

This year's Best New Artist was widely expected to go to Justin Bieber. After all, the Biebs has an incredibly strong fan base and the momentum of his biopic "Never Say Never" behind him.

However, Bieber wasn't the one accepting the Grammy -- no, the 2011 Best New Artist Grammy award went to Esperanza Spalding, 26.

Spalding -- a jazz bassist and vocalist from Portland, Ore. -- was known to few before the award. Now, everyone wants to know about her.

"I take this honor to heart so sincerely, and I'll do my damnedest to make great music for all of you. It's such an honor, and God bless," a cleared shocked Spalding said during her Grammy acceptance speech.

Bieber fans were clearly upset with Spalding's Best New Artist win. Some enterprising Beliebers even vandalized Spalding's Wikipedia page after her win.

Album of the Year: Lady Antebellum and Eminem Shut-Out

The 2011 Grammy Award surprises didn't end there. The final award of the night was the biggie: Album of the Year. Nominees included Eminem, Lady Antebellum, The Roots and Jay-Z. However, the Montreal-based Arcade Fire took home the top honors for their album "The Suburbs."

Safe to say everyone was surprised when their name was called -- especially the members of Arcade Fire.

"OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD. Thank you EVERYONE," the group tweeted after the win.

What were your favorite -- and least favorite -- moments of the 2011 Grammy Awards?
