Designer of Princess Beatrice’s Royal Wedding Hat Gets Defensive

Aside from frowning royal goddaughter Grace Van Cutsem, no aspect of the Royal Wedding gained as much immediate meme-spawning attention as Princess Beatrice's confounding hat. Over 130,000 people have joined a Facebook group celebrating the headwear, and no photoshop concept involving the hat has gone unexplored.

But now the hat's designer, Philip Treacy, has spoken out, and... he seems a tad defensive.

"My inspiration was beauty and elegance. It's a 21st century royal wedding," Treacy told HollywoodLife.com.

He explained that Beatrice and her sister Eugenie did not provide any input on the designs.

"No, they didn't tell me [what they wanted] because I've known them for a long time and I wanted them to look gorgeous and beautiful," he said. "They trusted me to make them. Gorgeous and beautiful can be open to interpretation... I thought they looked gorgeous and beautiful. But no one is crying if anyone didn't."

It does seem vaguely possible that "Don't cry over a ridiculous hat" would be the Royal version of the traditional "Don't cry over spilled milk" maxim repeated to young children.
