It's clearly more than just exhaustion.

After Demi Moore's publicist put out a statement on Tuesday announcing that the actress had been hospitalized the night before "to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health," an audio recording released today from a Monday evening 911 call tells a very different story as friends described the "semi-conscious" Moore "convulsing" and "burning up" as they waited for paramedics to arrive at the movie star's Los Angeles home.

"She smoked, um, something, it's not marijuana but it's similar to, it's similar to incense and she seems to be having convulsions of some sort," a female at Moore's home told the operator. The unidentified woman, however, wasn't sure how old the actress was and ended up having to ask others in the room for help coming up with the answer: 49.

Demi Moore Hospitalized: Can Divorce Make You Sick?

When asked if Moore's "overdose" was accidental or intentional, another woman at the house told the 911 operator, "Well, she smoked something, but you know, the reaction was accidental."

Though reports circulated this week that the mother of three had landed in the hospital after taking "whip-its," a cheap form of nitrous oxide inhalant typically used by those in their teens and 20s for a quick high, there was no mention of them on the call with 911. "She's been having some issues lately with some other stuff, so I'm not sure what she's been taking," the second woman said in the recording. "There's been some stuff recently that we're all just finding out." The woman also explained that Moore was "squeezing hands" to show she was conscious, but couldn't speak.

Ashton Kutcher Hits Brazil Fashion Show

Moore has had a tough several months. In September, the media began running stories about her husband Ashton Kutcher's alleged infidelities with younger women. Two months later, Moore announced that she was divorcing 33-year-old Kutcher after six years of marriage. "As a woman, a mother and a wife, there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred," she said in a statement, hinting at his supposed cheating. "And it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life."

Celebrity Breakups of 2011

Moore was a big-screen sensation in the '90s with films like "Ghost," Indecent Proposal," and "G.I. Jane," and became a media staple after her highly publicized 13-year marriage to Bruce Willis, which ended in divorce in 2000. After starring in "Margin Call" last year, Moore appeared to be back on a career upswing after agreeing to play feminist icon Gloria Steinem in the highly anticipated porn star biopic "Lovelace." Moore dropped out of the film this week.
