John Mayer: I Used Erotic Bestseller ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ to Pick Up a Woman

John Mayer may need to change his approach with the ladies! Earlier this week he publicly apologized for revealing TMI about ex-girlfriends Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Aniston. Then, during an appearance on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," he shared an embarrassing story about trying to pick up a woman by singing her a page from the blockbuster erotic trilogy Fifty Shades of Grey.

"I was trying to impress her and she had Fifty Shades of Grey on her Kindle. I said, 'I'm going to sing it to you,'" Mayer, 34, said. "So I sang one of the pages of Fifty Shades of Grey."

So did the woman fall into the rocker's arms after the serenade? Um … hardly.

"She fell to the ground laughing," he said.

"She didn't really get it. I'm not singing for a year and I just sang you 'Fifty Shades of Grey,'" said Mayer, who is getting ready to have vocal cord surgery. "It was steamy and it didn't rhyme, which was my big thing."

While promoting his new album Born and Raised, Mayer did an interview earlier this week in which he addressed the now-famous comments he made about his former lady loves Simpson and Aniston back in 2010. In back-to-back interviews, Mayer talked about his sex life with Simpson, saying "That girl, for me, is a drug. And drugs aren't good for you if you do lots of them. Yeah, that girl is like crack cocaine to me … Sexually it was crazy. That's all I'll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm." And then he spilled details about his relationship with the notoriously private Aniston, implying that he was the one who dumped her. "Have you ever loved somebody, loved her completely, but had to end the relationship for life reasons?" he said.

Mayer noted that after giving those interviews, he took a career hiatus to reexamine the direction his public life had been heading in. "I had nothing to say," Mayer told NPR's "All Things Considered." "I was going through a time in my life where I didn't really want to share what was going on, but I didn't want to be boring." He added: "I wasn't prepared to be honest, but I knew that I had to be open. When you're just open but not honest, then you start free-associating garbage."

In another appearance this week, Mayer appeared on Bravo's "Watch What Happens" and played Plead the Fifth with show host Andy Cohen. When asked about Simpson, Aniston, and another rumored ex, Taylor Swift, he wisely opted not to answer the question. He did then have to name his male celebrity crush, answering, "I would say Ryan Gosling because unisexually everybody would say: 'How does that guy do it?'"
