Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais doesn't play nice when he cracks jokes. But despite his well-earned reputation, some wondered whether Gervais, who has hosted twice before, would tone down the snark during his third go-round.
Nope. Not even close. Much like the honey badger, Gervais just don't care. Right off the bat, Gervais got into it, ripping on Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, and even Dame Helen Mirren. Gervais called Kim Kardashian a poor man's version of Kate Middleton. "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton, actually. But a bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker. And more easily bought."
Then he really let it rip on Johnny Depp, who was the first presenter of the night. Depp took the stage and Gervais asked him, "Have you seen 'The Tourist' yet?" Depp, suppressing a good-natured grin, had to admit that not even he has seen the notorious bomb. "Uh, no," Depp said.
Gervais has had other infamous confrontations in years past. He got into it with Jennifer Lopez at last year's ceremony. Gervais was about to take the stage when he ran into Lopez behind the curtain. Apparently, Lopez was worried she might be his next target. She said to Gervais, "Listen! I will kill you, you understand? I am from New York, my husband fights, we both fight, we will beat you up after the show." For the record, Gervais still did make fun of Lopez (and he is very much alive).
Gervais has also poked fun at the stars of "Sex and the City" while hosting the Globes. Last year, Gervais joked that he "was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster." He even dared to poke fun at a few unnamed members of the Church of Scientology. And in 2010, Gervais ripped Mel Gibson. "I like a drink as much as the next man," Gervais said. "Unless the next man is Mel Gibson" -- a not-so-subtle reference to Gibson's DUI arrest, when he went on an anti-Semitic rant.
But it's not as if the actors didn't see it coming. "I'm not beholden to any of these people," Gervais commented before the ceremony. "I don't have to watch what I say." And -- surprise, surprise -- he didn't.
