Suri Cruise learns how to ride a bike in the Big Apple

Suri is officially cruising!

Ever since Katie Holmes pulled the plug on her marriage to Tom Cruise in June, her single mom strategy has been to ensure that her daughter Suri experiences as normal a childhood as possible. Her latest effort? Teaching the 6-year-old how to ride a bicycle in busy Manhattan.

On Saturday, the 33-year-old actress-designer brought Suri to the bustling West Side Highway bike path to teach her the basics of pedal pushing on a set of wheels that would be a dream machine for any little girl. The hot pink bike, equip with training wheels for now, features streamers hanging from the handlebars and a basket — decorated with roses — to carry her favorite plush toy, Little G the giraffe.

And, no, the mini fashionista did not sport any spandex for her bike ride. Suri, who has blogs devoted to her wardrobe, wore a polka dot sweatshirt dress paired with red flats. She also had on a pink helmet because, ya know, safety first.

Interestingly enough, Holmes picked a rather busy location to give Suri her lesson. As most New Yorkers know, on the weekends, the West Side Highway bike path is flooded with riders, including very experienced ones who race by at high speeds. But Suri didn't seem unnerved by the many cyclists and runners, perhaps because it's an area she's very familiar with. The little girl attends gymnastic class at Chelsea Piers, a hulking sports and entertainment complex, which she cruised by during her ride.

But Suri's weekend fun didn't end there. On Sunday, she returned to one of her favorite lunch spots, Alice's Tea Cup, with Holmes, and Holmes' publicist and her daughter. The foursome later went to see "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," the Jennifer Garner movie about a 10-year-old boy who enters the world by sprouting out of a garden. Fittingly, Suri carried a purse that was made to look like a bouquet of flowers for the girls' day out.

Pretty soon Suri's social calendar will become even busier. Next month, she'll be attending school for the first time. So all bike rides, lunch dates, gymnastic classes, and trips to the movies will have to take place after school hours.
