Nicole Richie’s Fashionable Family Beach Outing

Nicole Richie never takes a break from being a fashionista — even for a day at the beach! The "Fashion Star" mentor and her husband, Joel Madden, brought their children, Harlow, 3, and Sparrow, 2, to a Malibu beach for some sun and fun on Monday. The reality TV star was covered up in an eye-catching retro orange pantsuit for the cozy family outing.

During the day, Richie — wearing oversized shades — took Harlow and Sparrow down to the water and watched them play in the sand. That was followed by a group game of catch with a mini basketball. Later, the mom felt so chilly from the ocean breeze that she wrapped herself up in a blanket. As for Joel, he snapped several photos of his wife and kids throughout the day, later sharing one of the pictures — featuring Nicole and the kid by the water —on his Tumblr blog.

Nicole recently opened up to California Style magazine about balancing her career and family. "I can't sit here and say that it's easy all day long," she said. "I'm just figuring out how to make it work. But I really don't have anything to complain about. I have a very supportive family and husband and that makes it so much easier. My parents live [nearby]. They're each 10 minutes away from me, and they're very eager to come over even when I don't want them to."

One of her scheduling secrets is to conduct business when her children are otherwise engaged. "I try to only work when the kids are in school, so I'll come home when they're out of school and then go back to work at night," she told Flare.

And although her daughter, whose full name is Harlow Kate Winter, is the namesake of two of Richie's fashion lines — House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate — Richie says it's not something that's ever been discussed when they're around the dinner table. "She has no idea that she has two lines named after her, I try and let her be a kid," she said.

While Nicole can currently be seen in NBC's "Fashion Star," next week Joel will become the reality star when the Australian version of "The Voice" hits the tube Down Under. He'll be a voice coach along with Keith Urban, Seal and Delta Goodrem.

The Good Charlotte singer has talked about his own struggle with his home life and work life. "It's hard to be away," Joel told Fuse. "[After having children was] the first time I ever questioned what I did because sometimes you miss moments and you're like, 'Is this worth it?'" Luckily, during his upcoming trip to Oz Joel will be accompanied by Richie and the kids — and perhaps they'll enjoy more special family moments like their day at the beach.
