Jessica Simpson ‘Elated’ Over the Birth of Daughter Maxwell

What has seemed like the longest celebrity pregnancy in history is now over! Jessica Simpson gave birth to her first child earlier today.

The "Fashion Star" mentor and her fiancé, Eric Johnson, welcomed their daughter Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. In a post on her official website, Jessica confirmed the news: "Eric and I are elated to announce the birth of our baby girl, Maxwell Drew Johnson. We are so grateful for the love, support and prayers we've received. This has been the greatest experience of our lives!!"

Us Weekly was first to break the baby news.

Yes, they selected the name Maxwell for a girl. It's actually a family name on Johnson's side — it's his middle name and his grandmother's surname. Life & Style was the first to report the name in March, noting that the new parents will call the girl Maxi. Simpson herself hinted it would be an "M" name. In newly released footage from her baby shower, the video ends with the camera panning from Simpson and Johnson overhead to a large letter "M" displayed on the wall. As for the newborn's middle name, Drew is the maiden name of Jessica's mother Tina Simpson.

In March, Jessica joked around with Ellen DeGeneres about baby names. Later, she talked baby names in the April issue of Elle magazine, promising: "It's nothing shocking and nothing you'll have to add to the dictionary. Still, when people hear it they'll know … why." Apparently her little hint indicates the use of two family names, both of which are also surnames. Maxwell and Drew are both thought of as masculine names as well.

Earlier this year, actress Lindsay Sloane also named her daughter Maxwell. In that case it was Maxwell Lue, which is just a rhyme away from Jessica's Maxwell Drew.

Other details about baby Johnson? According to Jessica's website, the baby weighed in at a 9 lbs. 13 ounces, which is slightly less than the 10-lb. baby Jessica told Elle her doctor had predicted, and measured 21¾ inches long. Also welcoming the child into the world were Jessica's mother, sister Ashlee Simpson and Eric's parents, who were all photographed at the hospital.
