Taylor Lautner: Lily and I Are ‘Close Friends’

Hunky heartthrob Taylor Lautner may have risen to fame via the mega-successful "Twilight" films, but with the franchise winding down, the 19-year-old is branching out. His newest movie, the action thriller "Abduction" -- in which he plays a young man who discover she went missing as a child and then must escape a team of trained killers --will hit theaters Friday, and director John Singleton is already talking about a sequel. Taylor recently chatted with omg! about his new movie, his shift from kid actor to adult movie star, and the status of his relationship with "Abduction" co-star Lily Collins. (Hint: It's not exactly the kind of comment you'd be thrilled to hear coming from your boyfriend.) Here's what he had to say:

What drew you to this role?

"The original thing that attracted me to this movie was just the story. I mean, I heard the storyline, and I was like, 'That story sounds like a movie that I would go see.' Something that I definitely would want to make. And the character's journey, I knew it would be challenging for me. I'm always looking forward to new challenges. And it was physically challenging, and emotionally challenging. And that, I was looking forward to."

The world has gotten to know you as a teen actor, so how difficult is the transition into adult roles?

"I mean, it's tough. You try and not over think it. Because, you know, when you think about what the right decision is, and what the wrong decision is, that's usually when it'll go wrong. So, for me, it's kind of just a matter of doing things that I love, and doing things that I'm passionate about. When I hear an idea that really strikes me, and some thing that really touches me, I know that's what I should be doing. And I mean, that was definitely the case with "Abduction." I heard the idea and knew at that moment, that I wanted it to be my next project.

You're dating your "Abduction" co-star Lily Collins. Did you two meet on the set?

"Lily and I are great friends. And ... no, we met before. Over, like, the past couple years, we've seen each other at like random events and stuff. Never knew each other really well, but yeah, we would see each other at random events."

So you guys are just friends?

"Yeah, we're close friends."

Both of your recent female co-stars, Kristen Stewart from "The Twilight" series as well as Lily, are both playing Snow White in different movies: Kristen in "Snow White and the Huntsmen," and Lily in another Snow White adaptation. What's it like being around so many Snow Whites?

"It's kind of funny. I mean, they're both, obviously, extremely talented. And I think both of the movies will be great. I kind of have an excuse not having to choose sides because both of their movies are extremely different. Kristen's is a little darker, a little edgier, more action. And Lily's is, I don't know, I would describe it as being more in the tone of "Enchanted." There's still a lot of action. But I think both of them will be great, and, they'll both pull it off very well."

I know you're into martial arts. Did you get to use any of those skills in "Abduction"? Did you do your own stunts?

"Yeah. I had the opportunity to do most all of my stunts, which was a lot of fun. There were some dangerous ones, but it was a great time, and it was definitely worth it. We really wanted this move to feel as grounded and real as possible, so for the fight scenes, I mean, it really helps when you have the real actors doing them. And, I mean, I had an awesome boxing scene with me and [the actor who played] my father, Jason Isaacs. It was the two of us doing it. Which, was great."

You're in great shape, but did you have to change up your workout to get in shape for this role?

"Yeah. There was definitely some special training required for this movie, [a] very different kind of training than I've had to do before. This was less weight lifting, and you know, for the physical appearance of the body and actually being able to do things. Actually being able to box. Being able to ride a motorcycle, to wrestle, to do these fight scenes. So the physical preparation was extremely intense."

With all of your travel, how do you stay in shape on the road?

"It's tough. It definitely requires a lot of work because, when you do a full day of press, you wake up and start the day bright and early. So there's no time to get a workout in before. And then you finish, you know, 5 or 6 p.m., and then it's probably best to just go to the gym right after that and get it out of the way. But it's a challenge, it is, when you're traveling ... to stay in shape and find the time to work out, and just continue eating healthy while you're gone, as well."

What are your thoughts on the "Twilight" franchise winding down? Are you sad or ready for it to end?

"Yeah, it's definitely a little bittersweet. I was not ready for it to end, because we all had become so close and such good friends. We have a ton of fun making those movies. So the last day of filming was definitely not fun. And it's a weird feeling to think that we won't be going back to playing those characters anymore, because they've been such a huge part of our lives for the past four years."

So, what's up next for you?

For the rest of this year, I'm gonna be promoting "Abduction" and "Breaking Dawn" back to back. And I'll take these all the way through until December. So, it'll be a busy rest of the year doing that. And then, during that time, I should be making my mind up on what should actually be next after that. There's a few new things that I'm very excited about, that I can tell you are definitely different than anything I've done before. But hopefully we should know soon what'll be next."
