Crush: Hollywood’s Next GenerationMeet ‘Hollywood Heights’ star Nick Krause
If you saw the 2011 Oscar-winning movie "The Descendants" — and who didn't? — then you remember 20-year-old Nick Krause's character Sid, a slacker who unintentionally provides some comic relief in an often somber story about a man (George Clooney) trying to hold his family together after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident. Sid is the boyfriend of Clooney's on-screen daughter, played by Shailene Woodley of "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," who ends up getting punched in the face in one memorable scene. This summer, Krause (pronounced "Kr-ow-zee") appears in Nickelodeon's new Nick at Nite show, "Hollywood Heights," about a high school student ("One Life to Live's" Brittany Underwood) trying to navigate the music industry. "Hollywood Heights," which is based on the Mexican telenovela "Alcanzar una Estrella," premieres a new episode every weeknight through October. Krause, who hails from Austin, Texas, says one of the reasons he signed onto the show is that it's "something a lot of people haven't seen before." What was your first job? With "The Descendants," I got so fortunate — it was my first job out of high school. From what my parents tell me, I did pretty well for a first gig. (Fun fact: Education, not work, has been Krause's focus most of his life; he took a college math course through Southwestern University when he was 10!)
Who is your celebrity crush? I have to say Emma Stone, because she seems like the coolest girl ever. And Emma Watson, too. All the Emmas.
What's one thing on your bucket list that you've done? One thing you haven't done? One thing that I have done was go skydiving, which I actually got to do on the last day of "The Descendants" shoot. That was a lot of fun. (Co-star George Clooney surprised Krause with tickets for him, Shailene Woodley, and two others to go!) [Clooney] told me I could have all the fun in the world, but that he didn't want to die. It was amazingly fun. I've never felt such an adrenaline rush. As for something I haven't done, I'd really like to one day release an album of original material ... music. I have most of an album's worth of material written, but it's just been one of those side projects, just something for the fun of it. Before I did acting, I was very heavy into the music scene. I'd like to go back to it one day. As for now, though, I'm focusing on acting. I figure I've got a really great window of opportunity here....
What are your favorite songs on your iPod? [Trip-hop musician] Bonobo's "Eyesdown" and "Recurring." Then I've also been listening to Talib Kweli, who works with Mos Def a lot. I've been a hip-hop fan for a while. He's got this one song called "Joy" that I really love.
Who's your favorite artist? I'd have to say Bonobo is my favorite artist. Although, lately, and I almost hate myself for saying this, I've just started to appreciate how good Kanye West is at his job. I don't really want to read any of his interviews or anything like that, but I've been listening to some of his songs, and I've gotta say, it's pretty solid material. I used to be in this thing called the School of Rock where we learned about AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, all these classic rock groups, and it was a culture that really did not allow for any rap or any other types of music. You know, we were all trying to get good at that one genre. So, I don't want to say we were elitist, but, uh, sort of?
