Crush: Hollywood’s Next GenerationMeet the New Carrie Bradshaw
On "Sex and the City," we watched Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw tackle plenty of, um, adult situations. Now, however, it's time to see a more PG version of our favorite Manhattanite. Actress AnnaSophia Robb, the 18-year-old star of family flicks like "Soul Surfer" and "Because of Winn Dixie," will try on Carrie's Manolos for the CW's "The Carrie Diaries," a series about the writer-to-be's life as a high school senior in the '80s premiering this fall.
Fans caught the first glimpse of AnnaSophia dressed as the style icon this week as shooting began. And while her look is a little too much for me, it seems just like the kind of glam, colorful ensemble Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte's future bestie would string together — especially in the so-called decade of excess! After all, Carrie is the only woman I can think of who can pull off wearing a tutu in the street, a flower pin the size of her head, and a really tall feather in her veil on her original, ill-fated wedding day.
While a lot of us might be reluctant to embrace another actress as Carrie, AnnaSophia recently revealed that one very important person is on her side: SJP, who played Carrie on the HBO show from 1998 to 2004 and in the "Sex and the City" movies in 2008 and 2010. "She sent me a letter!" Robb told Us Weekly. "I wrote her one back, too. She was just very encouraging about it all. It was really cool!"
The shows share some things, such as the main character and writer Candace Bushnell, who penned the books upon which both series are based. Still, Robb has made it clear that her show will be markedly different. Except for those crazy fashions, of course! "I know everyone's going to compare it to 'Sex and the City', but we're never going to be that," she said. "The show is more for my generation, but it's set in the '80s, so it's fun."
