Demi Lovato: ‘It’s a Big Responsibility Dating Me!’

The new year is the perfect time for a fresh start -- just ask Demi Lovato, who's spent 2011 overcoming a high-profile meltdown that landed her in rehab for issues including an eating disorder and cutting. The 19-year-old singer reveals in the latest issue of Glamour magazine that she's happy to be moving forward with her career and her personal life. But she's smart enough to realize that knowing where she's been will help make her stronger in the future. For example, the former "Sonny With a Chance" star covered her cutting scars with some inspirational ink.

"I think scars are like battle wounds -- beautiful, in a way. They show what you've been through and how strong you are for coming out of it," she tells the mag. "My tattoos say 'Stay strong.' 'Stay' on one [wrist] and 'strong' on the other. Now I'm able to look at them and be thankful for being alive. I think that I've been blessed over the past year to be able to start over."

By now you've heard Demi's beautiful comeback song, "Skyscraper," in which she says she's determined to, yes, "stay strong" despite her detractors. She notes in the interview that it's the kind of message to which everyone can relate. "It's to every person who tried to bring me down," she explains. "Everyone has the bully or the mean girl or the ex-boyfriend who tried to bring them down. For me, I think of the people who really weren't there for me when I went into treatment. It was a really dark time for me because I had only a few people -- I had surrounded myself with so many artificial friendships. It's about those people too."

Needless to say, Demi is on the lookout for a special guy who will fill the role so many of those fickle relationships once did, but she admits she doesn't expect finding him to be easy; He's gotta be strong, too. She's looking for "someone who's not only supportive in my career but also in my [emotional] recovery]," Demi adds. "It's a big responsibility dating me. Because I come with a little bit of baggage, you know? I'm completely open. I'm honest about the journey I've been on, so I definitely don't take dating lightly anymore. And they have to make me laugh!"
