Demi and Joe: Before and After

Screaming fans. Your face on magazine covers. Invitations to the best Hollywood parties. Sounds great, right? But actress Demi Lovato is here to tell us the celebrity life is not always so fabulous. Say, for example, when your famous boyfriend/BFF dumps you about a week after you dish to a magazine that, "Most likely, we'll be together for a really long time." Ouch!

In this month's Teen Vogue, Demi and her ex Joe Jonas share the cover story, which the magazine began while the "Camp Rock 2" co-stars were dating and finished after their highly publicized split in May. "I kind of learned throughout this whole experience that having my private life public isn't as awesome as it might seem," Demi confessed.

The couple, who announced their courtship in March, interviewed one another for the spread less than two days before the big breakup. They talked about their first impressions -- "I saw right away how smiley you were," that heartbreaker Joe said -- and even how they made the awkward transition from friends to (short-lived) flames. "One night I asked him, 'What is the deal? We're perfect for each other. What are you doing?' And he was like, 'This is really awkward. I have to go,'" Demi revealed. But the conversation apparently sent Joe, 20, into deep thought. "Once she confronted me, I kind of confronted myself," he said.

From there, the two entered into temporary bliss, which prompted 17-year-old Demi to divulge another comment about how it felt to watch Joe with his gorgeous former girlfriends and fellow celebs, such as Taylor Swift and Camilla Belle. "Every girlfriend he had, I always wanted to have a friendship with, because I felt like if she was worthy enough to be with him, then she must be great," revealed Demi. "It sucked, watching, but I was always happy for him."

The Disney superstars chatted about the fun of working together on the set of the "Camp Rock" sequel. "In some ways, making this movie felt like camp all over again," said Joe. "During breaks, we weren't hanging out in trailers -- we were going down to the lake or playing in the woods."

But they also talked about more serious topics, including the careers they see for themselves in the future. After their scheduled joint tour this summer, that is. Awk-ward! Demi wants "to be able to play more serious parts," she said. "I think it would be awesome to play an Angelina Jolie-type role in an action movie." Meanwhile, Joe also has big plans. "I'd love to act more. I've had to turn down multiple movies because I was on tour, but it's encouraging to know that someday there might be the right role, the right timing," he said. "I've been writing a lot of music, so hopefully very soon I'll have recorded a project of my own."

Hmm, timing does seem to be a problem for the ladies man, at least judging from what he told Teen Vogue when they went back to him following the couple's demise. "It could have been better timing, but there's never really a good time for [a breakup]. I really care about her," he insisted. "When I met Demi, I knew right away that our friendship was really strong. I don't want to lose that ever." Those are sweet words, but Demi's reponse to the mag was not quite as heartfelt. "At this point I'd rather be hanging out with my girlfriends than seeing my ex," she said candidly, before acknowledging it was, in fact, Joe's choice to end things.
