Why Was Katie Holmes in Court?

Now that Katie Holmes' Broadway play has closed, she has more free time on her hands – and she's been spending it in a very unusual setting.

Holmes was a "surprise spectator" in a Queens, New York, courtroom on Wednesday, reports Page Six. The 34-year-old actress showed up with an unknown companion to listen to the opening statements in a high-profile alleged shaken baby death case. According to the report, Suri's mom was wearing a conservative outfit and had on no makeup (despite being the new face of Bobbi Brown cosmetics).

So why was Holmes there? Is she really that bored now that "Dead Accounts" is over? Well, it turns out that the lead prosecutor in the case against Hang Bin Li, a Chinese immigrant accused of violently shaking his 2-month-old daughter Annie to death in 2007, is one of the star's pals, Leigh Bishop. “She was there supporting her friend who is the prosecuting DA," Holmes' rep told Page Six.

While that certainly sounds supportive, it also sounds ... mildly distracting. We’re sure the jurors were doing double takes at Holmes in the galley, which is likely why she made a hasty exit after the opening arguments, according to Page Six. And the New York Times noted in their article about the trial, “There was also an unusual celebrity appearance by the actress Katie Holmes.” However, the actress also happens to come from a legal-minded family – her father, Martin Holmes, is an attorney in Toledo, Ohio, which came in handy when it came to her quickie divorce from Tom Cruise over the summer.

Holmes’ Wednesday afternoon was much less intense. After borough-hopping back to Manhattan, she brought her 6-year-old daughter to the Hudson River Greenway for a playdate. Both mother and daughter wore matching navy puffy coats to stay warm during the chilly outing – and Holmes smiled watching her daughter navigate the slide like a pro.
