Back in the '90s, Thora Birch was a household name; the actress had roles in films such as "Monkey Trouble," "Hocus Pocus," and "Now and Then." She was America's little darling and seemed to have smoothly transitioned into more adult roles in films such as the Oscar winning "American Beauty" and the indie flick "Ghost World," which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.

But the 31-year-old actress fell off the map, and when the Guardian caught up with her, she explained where she's been, saying she "decided to take a break and live my life, branch out a little, educate myself."

So why walk away from a budding career? Thora explained, "I tried to walk a fine line between being alluring and somewhat glamorous but maintain a strong identity and pursue things that were a little more thoughtful, and I guess nobody really wanted women to do that at that time... I just felt like I was making people angry, because I wouldn't wear the frilly bows. I just didn't take advice and I think people got pissed off at me for not taking advice."

In 2010,Thora was fired from the off-Broadway revival of "Dracula" after it was alleged that her father, Jack, had physically threatened one of the other actors. And she was just 14 years old when she was fired from the 1999 film "Election." Thora explains, "I pissed a lot of people off over a long period of time and they found a way to upset me, hoping that upset would bring a change in my behavior. Like a distancing … But I'm done, I'm done. People wanted me to be not fine. A lot of it was b******."

So how does Thora feel when she looks at the career that her "Ghost World" co-star Scarlett Johansson has had after accepting roles that she [Thora] had rejected? She told The Guardian, "I don't know. Look at her. Whatever. I still love her, we were kids together.
