If the 2013 Tony nominations made one thing clear, it's this: Tony voters love the movies, but are totally over movie stars hitting the Great White Way. With the exception of Tom Hanks (nominated for his lead role in the late Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy"), most of the A-list Hollywood set was left off the list, including some names with serious star power.

Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, and Bette Midler are all notably absent from the nominees. Baldwin is currently starring in "Orphans," which was nominated for Best Revival of a play, though the 55-year-old actor was not. Other overlooked A-listers include Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain and Emmy winner Jim Parsons.

The Tony voters did show some more love to famous musicians, however. Rock legend Cyndi Lauper earned a chance to take home a Tony for her music and lyrics for "Kinky Boots," which picked up a whopping 13 nominations (more than any other show), including one for Best Musical. In addition, Phish front man Trey Anastasio landed a nomination for the musical score he crafted with Amanda Green for "Hands on a Hardbody."

Beyond the names included (and blatantly left off) however, perhaps the most important takeaway from this year's list of nominees is the fact that all four productions nominated for Best Musical are based on or have been movies. Considering this, it's even more surprising that the powers-that-be in the Tony voting lot seem so averse to honoring Hollywood elite in their nominations.

What's more, it points to a clear trend to create musicals based on preexisting fan bases, which could indicate that Broadway's tide is moving in a new direction … toward stories that are not actually new. If this trend continues, you might want to place those bets on seeing "Rocky the Musical" on this list in 2014.
