Selena Gomez on the 2013 MTV Movie Awards (MTV)
It looks like Selena Gomez's bindi isn't going away anytime soon.
The 20-year-old singer, who first darned the Hindu religious garb on her forehead during a performance of her new song "Come & Get It" at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday, wore the jewels again on Tuesday night during her performance on "Dancing with the Stars." Additionally, she sported the bindi while performing the song on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" for an episode that taped on Monday and aired Tuesday.
"The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance," Rajan Zed, a spokesperson for the Hindu religion in the U.S. said in a statement issued Monday. "It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol … It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions."
Omg! has reached out to Zed for comment on Gomez's continued use of the bindi. In 2008, he heavily criticized Heidi Klum for wearing a costume of the Hindu god Kali to her annual Halloween ball.
Selena Gomez on "Dancing with the Stars":
But Gomez isn't the first performer to appropriate the Hindu symbol for pop culture purposes. Katy Perry (while visiting India), Gwen Stefani (in the '90s, several times), Madonna, Miley Cyrus (just around town), Jessica Simpson (for her TV show "The Price of Beauty"), and Perrie Edwards of Little Mix (while visiting her One Direction boyfriend's family) have all worn it for similar reasons in the past.
On Monday, Gomez announced she'd be embarking on a world tour of over 50 cities in August to promote her new album.
Jason Evigan, part of the production team Suspex, was Gomez's producer on the album, and he believes the new material is going to take the singer to the next level. "Her album's really cool. It's a really strong dance record and it's really cool actually. I think it's going to take her to the next level too … All the stuff I've heard has been really, really cool," he told MTV News.
“She's got some really cool like ethnic influence, kind of tribally dance drums and stuff like that. I kind of feel she's going to be like a new J.Lo kind of thing," he continued. "She's not a little girl anymore. She wants to be like that and be respected like the great pop artists out there. And I think she is. I think this album is really gonna blossom her into a new realm of electronic pop dance artist."
Sounds like Gomez isn't ready to back down from her game plan anytime soon.
