Sarah Silverman has lost her best friend — her beloved dog, Duck. The star shared the sad news Wednesday, on Twitter.

"It always tickled me that even though we were different species he was my best friend. Duck left me today but I forgive him," she wrote.

But just because Duck is gone, doesn't mean he is forgotten. The funny girl was clearly in a reflective mood as she took to WhoSay to post a truly touching "obituary type thing" in honor of her late companion.

She remembered finding Duck "Doug" Silverman (his formal name, no doubt) at a no-kill shelter in Van Nuys, California, when he was just over 5 years old. Though Duck was "serene" and "stoic," he also "loved love," and it didn't take long for the furry friend to find a place in Sarah's heart … or her bed. "We have slept most every night together (and many lazy afternoons)," she mused.

While Duck's health had been on the decline for years — he had lost his sight, his hearing, and developed arthritis — he "seemed comfortable" until recently, she explained. But when he stopped eating and drinking, the comedienne knew "it was time to let him go."

Silverman's boyfriend, Kyle Dunnigan, and her sister, Laura, rushed to be by her side so that Duck's final moments could be happy ones.

"I held him close — in our usual spoon position and stroked him," she recalled. "I told him how loved he was, and thanked him for giving me such happiness and for his unwavering companionship and love... I held him and kissed him and whispered to him well passed his passing."

A doctor administered a shot, which Silverman described as "basically an overdose of sleeping meds," and Duck drifted off.

But perhaps it's the final few words that summarize this canine's impact on the star's life best. "14 years. My longest relationship. My only experience of maternal love. My constant companion. My best friend. Duck."

Hopefully Sarah can take comfort knowing that though Duck's gone, he will not be forgotten.
