When Jennifer Hudson brought home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2007 for her role as Effie White in "Dreamgirls," it was a big deal! Not only was she one of only a few actors to win an Oscar for a debut role, but she was — and is still — the only "American Idol" contestant to win the prestigious award. But unlike her peers who had long dreamed of taking home Oscar gold, Jennifer was blissfully unaware of the significance of her big win.
The 32-year-old Chicago native opened up to Net-a-Porter's The Edit magazine about the big moment, saying, "I didn't know what the Oscars was. Where we come from, we don't know anything about that world. If you see it on TV, it's like, 'Oh, people in fancy suits and ties.'"
Now the former Disney Cruise Line employee has an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a Grammy and more than a million album sales on her impressive resume, but she still can't believe her good fortune.
