While the annual event may not be the most prestigious (Best Shirtless Performance doesn't exist at the Oscars), the show shines a bright light on cinema's pop-culture impact.

This year's top contenders include "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "We're the Millers," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and "American Hustle." Ten years ago, "50 First Dates" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" were the MTV anointed.

2. Nick Carter and Paris Hilton were totally in a relationship.
3. Somehow, "Bruce Almighty" stars Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston lost to the cast of "Starsky and Hutch" for Best Kiss.
4. Ashlee Simpson walked the red carpet because we were all singing "Pieces of Me."
5. Seann William Scott received props for his dance number in "American Wedding."
6. Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro were happily married and starring in MTV's "Till Death Do Us Part."
7. Eminem and the group D12 performed "My Band."
8. "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell won Best Cameo for his appearance in "Scary Movie 3."
9. "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" beat out "Finding Nemo" for Best Movie.
10. "School of Rock's" Jack Black sported a T-shirt in support of then-presidential candidate John Kerry while collecting his Golden Popcorn award for Best Comedic Performance.
11. We were so obsessed with Uma Thurman and "Kill Bill" that it won three awards.
12. Host Lindsay Lohan won Breakthrough Female for her performance in "Freaky Friday." "Mean Girls" was also celebrating its second month in release. So fetch!
