Who’s the ‘Mother’ on Elton John’s Newborn Son’s Birth Certificate?

Elton John and his husband David Furnish are the epitome of a modern family.

The two, who were married in a civil ceremony in 2005, welcomed their second son, Elijah Joseph Daniel, via a surrogate on January 11 and gave the little bundle of joy the last name of Furnish-John. Unfortunately for the couple – and other same-sex couples just like them – the government has yet to fully catch up to what is considered “the new normal” and birth certificates still only allow for there to be one mother and one father ... not two dads.

So just like they did with first son, Zachary, the “Piano Man” singer is listed as little Elijah’s father … and Furnish is listed as mother. So does that mean John, 65, is the boy’s true biological father? He and Furnish have yet to say, but the birth certificate’s information could simply be a formality.

“If one partner is already named the father, then the birth certificate may only allow for the other parent to be designated as the ‘mother,’ and so yes – the other partner may be listed as the ‘mother,’” Los Angeles-based family law attorney Marlo Van Oorschot tells omg!. “What is crucial to understand is that the birth certificate is not the legally operative document in every case.”

In layman’s terms: It means absolutely nothing that Furnish is listed as Elijah’s “mother” on his birth certificate!
