Jennifer Garner, Beyoncé, Jane Lynch, and More Urge Ban on 'Bossy'

What do Jennifer Garner, Beyoncé, Jane Lynch, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, and NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson have in common? The A-listers teamed up with the Girl Scouts of the USA and LeanIn.org for a campaign that urges a ban on the word bossy and encourages young ladies to be leaders.

In a Public Service Announcement released on Sunday, the stars point out that girls are discouraged from taking on leadership roles because of name calling and labeling.

"I think the word 'bossy' is just a squasher," "Glee" star Lynch says.

The "Run the World" singer adds, "Girls are less interested in leadership than boys," for fear of being called "bossy."

The campaign hopes to empower young women by encouraging everyone to sign a pledge to ban the five-letter word at banbossy.com. In addition to some of Hollywood’s elite, the girl power campaign features Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg who also founded LeanIn.org and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

“We need to recognize the many ways we systematically discourage leadership in girls from a young age — and instead, we need to encourage them," says Sandberg. "So the next time you have the urge to call your little girl bossy? Take a deep breathe and praise her leadership skills instead."

But perhaps the strongest message comes from Queen B who proclaims, "I'm not bossy — I'm the boss."
