Even in divorce, Hilary Duff's marriage to Mike Comrie has been pretty picturesque. But that doesn't mean it has been easy behind the scenes.

Duff, 27, reveals in a new Cosmo interview that the experience has left her questioning marriage. The star of the upcoming TV Land show Younger filed for divorce last month after four-and-a-half years of marriage, including one year of separation, in which she and Comrie vacationed together with their almost 3-year-old son, Luca, and were seen getting cozy in public.

"I don't want to sound bitter because I'm definitely not, but I don't know if people are meant to be together forever," Duff tells the magazine. "Things happen over a long relationship that you can't always fight. A marriage of 20 years, the accomplishment of that must feel really great, but there are also huge sacrifices. I just always want to fight for happiness."

Still, Duff doesn't regret her time with the former NHL player.

"Mike and I were very in love when we met," she says. "We both really wanted to get married. I'd been working since the age of 11 or 12, so making that choice at a young age seemed right for me. Maybe it wasn't, but we spent the majority of our time together really happy. It wasn't working well enough to stay together, but there was still a lot of love involved. It was just a slow set-in of us not being the match that we used to be. I'm lucky for the person he is and I am, and how we decided to handle this."

Someone who didn't handle his relationship with Duff as well? Aaron Carter, who dated the actress-singer when they were both young teenagers. He made a very public play, though tweets and with comments he made in interviews, to win back Duff after her separation last year. It all began when he tweeted, "Don't be that stupid douche that loses the love of your life forever... Like me...."

Unfortunately for Carter, Duff seemed to be more weirded out than flattered by his words.

"Him reaching out through social media?" she says. "It's ridiculous! But then people do it all the time, like Chris Brown and Karrueche [Tran]? Come on, guys. Keep it between text messages."
