Elle Fanning: From Fashionista to Fashion Faux Pas

What the heck happened to you, Elle Fanning?

Not even a year ago, the starlet, now 14, was pretty much guaranteed rave reviews on her red carpet looks, including unforgettable outfits at events for “Super 8” and “Somewhere.” In fact, some might even argue that as the youngster began to tower over her older sister Dakota, she was also becoming a bigger fashionista.

She was looking great and taking risks, which paid off most of the time. But all that erupted at the premiere for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” when she donned a pair of truly ugly geisha-style Prada sandals. They were referred to as “Spice Girls knock-offs” and “moon shoes for My Little Ponies.”

The situation didn’t get any prettier when she appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in a poofy white frock worthy of the creepy compound on “Big Love.” But Fanning’s ensemble for the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards makes it official: the gorgeous girl’s style is in the gutter.

Sure, she was wearing Chanel, but that doesn’t mean it was attractive. The tent-shaped dress was covered in pink and green flowers that would have looked much better as wallpaper or a Southern hotel bedspread. Its unfinished hemline didn’t help. The shoes were striped and busy and arguably an even bigger eyesore than the geisha monstrosities.

Stylists of Hollywood, please help. Elle Fanning is 14, 5-foot-7, fresh-faced, gorgeous and talented. This shouldn’t be happening. It makes us sad. Our fingers are crossed that an intervention is imminent.
