Demi Lovato’s Big Secret: She Has Been in Sober Living Facility for a Year

Recovery from addiction can be a lifelong struggle, but Demi Lovato certainly seems dedicated.

The former Disney star has been residing in a Los Angeles-area sober living home for more than a year in order to make sure she doesn’t slip up and revert back to her old ways, reports TMZ. According to the source, Lovato “felt she needed the support and guidance from counselors and other addicts who understood her situation.”

Although she owns a $2.25 million four-bedroom mansion in nearby Sherman Oaks, every night the 20-year-old heads home to the outpatient facility, where she felt “she wouldn’t lose her way,” adds the source.

Lovato entered treatment in October 2010 to get help for a myriad of issues, including anorexia, bulimia, and cutting, after she punched a backup dancer who had tattled on her for late-night partying while on tour with the Jonas Brothers. Her family immediately whisked her away to Timberline Knolls near Chicago, where she spent 90 days until she was released in late January 2011. Her time away was “really hard and scary,” she told British mag Fabulous in April 2012. “I had 14 hours of therapy a day. I listened to music and learned to knit. When I finally left, it was like being let out of prison.”

But despite the struggle, Lovato stuck with it. In another interview with People, the “Give Your Heart a Break” singer admitted she took her recovery “day by day. I'd be lying if I said there weren't days where I just want to stay in bed all day because I'm ashamed of my body. It's a struggle I'll probably have to deal with for the rest of my life. But I have so much life to live; I don't want to waste it. It's a new chapter in my life, starting now.”

Although Lovato always maintained that eating and emotional issues were her sole problems, last April she opened up more and said drugs and alcohol were also at play. "Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs," she told Fabulous. "They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass. I thought they were my friends. I thought I was having fun."
