The irony wasn't lost on us when Chris Brown showed up for his "Today" show chat with Matt Lauer on Monday wearing a shirt covered with peace signs and hearts. Perhaps because one of his last morning show appearances — which ended with him breaking a window with a chair — has something to do with it.

Despite several tough questions, though, Brown smiled and laughed throughout the interview, even at some awkwardly random moments.

The 23-year-old, who was promoting his new single "Fine China," was asked if he really is a changed man following his 2009 brutal assault against Rihanna, as he has claimed publicly.

"I've been humbled by the whole experience," said Brown, who seemed nervous, fidgety, and nodded a lot during the interview. "From me losing everything, you know, to me having to regain public opinion or whatever it is – but most importantly, you know, knowing that what I did was totally wrong and having to kind of deal with myself and kind of forgive myself in the same breath and being able to apologize to, you know, Rihanna and be that man that can be who is a man, you know?"

Lauer went on to call out Brown for claiming he's changed despite making headlines for his parking lot fight with Frank Ocean, bar brawl with Drake, and Instagram photos which were less than wholesome.

"I think everybody is entitled to their opinion," replied Brown, who, at one point in the interview, turned around and started to waving to fans outside while being grilled by Lauer. "For me, it's just a learning process. You know, I have to just take it one day at a time. I can't make everybody like me ... it's about me being positive. And everything I do in my music is to inspire the world."

As for his current relationship status with Rihanna, he said they are still together – despite a radio station's recent report claiming Brown said they had split.

"We're fine," he said. "In the actual interview in which they tried to depict that, they got it wrong. [It was] an old interview from a year prior. Yeah, everything's good, we're fine."

When Lauer noted that people were concerned about Rihanna's decision to get back together with him, Brown replied, "As far as me and her are concerned, she knows my heart, and I know her heart. So I'm not really focused on the negative."

After Brown talked about the 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling he underwent following his felony assault conviction, Lauer asked if he was sure it would never happen again. In perhaps the most uncomfortable moment of all, Brown laughed nervously, said, "Absolutely," then laughed again.
