Sometimes less is more — but apparently no one told Miley Cyrus that.
The 21-year-old star posted a snapshot on Instagram on Saturday that shows off what appears to be a new tattoo on the inside of her lower lip.
The ink features a brightly colored emoji of a sad kitty, complete with a tear. (We have to be honest, just thinking about getting a tattoo in this sensitive spot makes us want to cry too.)
Though it's true that Miley hasn't confirmed if it's real or not, several signs point to yes.
On Friday, the "Bangerz" singer tweeted a pic of herself lying in a bathtub with a soaked washcloth over her face. She hashtagged the shot #OUCHYBOOBOO. You can say that again.
In her caption, she also "thanks" Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd of The Flaming Lips, as well as her close friend Katy Weaver. It appears that the artist was Miley's partner in crime during the actual tattoo trip, which went down in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Miley performed on Thursday.
Katy posted her own pic chronicling their adventure in which the two girls flash inner lip tattoos: the sad kitty on Miley's and what looks like a small white heart on Katy's. Her caption, which declares, "we got tattoos on our lips," seems to be a pretty clear indication that this ink isn't going to rub off any time soon.

We're not surprised Miley nabbed for a kitty tattoo, either. She certainly seems fond of cats. The former Disney darling performed at the 2013 MTV VMAs with a floating, crying cat on the screen behind her and felines regularly show up during her performances on her Bangerz tour.
And this is hardly the first time Miley's opted for unusual tattoos in notably painful places. In September 2013, she got "Rolling" tattooed on the bottom of her right foot and "$tone" (yes with the dollar sign instead of a proper S) tattooed on her left.
In total, the pop star has about 20 tattoos … so far. Other notables include a rather large portrait of her grandmother's face on her right forearm, the phrase "just breathe," quotes from a 1910 speech given by President Theodore Roosevelt, plus a smattering of symbols including a peace sign, heart, and a cross on her fingers.
And while, in the past, Miley has explained the motivation for some of her tattoos (she tweeted that she got her grandmother's portrait "Because I am her favorite & she is mine"), so far she hasn't commented on the cat.
Guess we'll have to wait and see if she decides to shed some light on her new, unusual body art.
