Lindsay Lohan shed a tear during her sometimes awkward, sometimes funny appearance on "Late Show With David Letterman" on Tuesday. And, while she certainly has many detractors, she has one supporter in her corner: her ex-boyfriend, Aaron Carter.

In a recent interview, the 25-year-old "Crazy Little Party Girl" singer, who was LiLo's first love, had nothing but kind words for the troubled star.

"I love that girl," Carter told PeterDee.TV. "She'll always have a beautiful place in my heart. She's a great person."

As for her ongoing legal woes – which have her headed back to rehab for a sixth stint on May 2 – Carter says the public should support her.

"She just deals with struggles like we all do. We're human, you know?" he said. "It's important for others to embrace somebody when they're down – not kick them while they are down. I don't have intentions like that. I'll always be there for her."

Carter — who has had his own troubles, including a drug arrest and rehab stint — has certainly changed his tune from just a few years back, when the love he showed his ex was of the tough variety.

In 2010 — around the time Lohan, 26, skipped a court date to attend the Cannes Film Festival and a bench warrant was issued for her arrest — Carter spoke out publicly to her through OK! magazine.

"They are going to make an example out of you now, Lindsay, and you deserve it," he said at the time. "I don't know what to say about it anymore. I'm pissed."

During the same interview, Carter said his ex was unrecognizable to him.

"I dated her when I was 12, 13 years old," he said. "[Lindsay now is] not the Lindsay I know. I see somebody who is washed out, puffy. That's not who I know."

On Lohan's much-hyped appearance on "Letterman" Tuesday, she made sarcastic comments, rolled her eyes, and playfully flirted it up with the 65-year-old host, which we detailed in our interview recap. However, she also discussed her upcoming rehab stint in a positive way.

"This is an opportunity for me to focus on what I love in life, and I don't think it's a bad thing," she said. "I think it's a blessing, and not a curse."
