Much ado has been made about actress Gwyneth Paltrow's bouncing around in the award-winning universe of Julian Fellowes, the creator of Masterpiece Classic's "Downton Abbey."

First, rumors surfaced that Paltrow was dead set on a guest-starring role alongside folks like Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery.

Though the rumor was shot down, a Monday report said Fellowes is keen on a much bigger commitment from the Goop author -- a starring role in forthcoming NBC period drama "The Gilded Age."

Set during the late 19th century in America, "Gilded" would see the rise (and fall) of immense wealth and American social circles, and highlight historical events like the sinking of the Titanic.

Here are five reasons why Paltrow should sign on...

The "Glee" effect: It's a no-brainer that Ryan Murphy's inclusion of Gwyneth in his high school musical boosted her current popularity and, most importantly, her likeability. Given her affinity for art house flicks and glam ensemble films, watching her belt Cee Lo's "Forget You" brought her closer to earth.

"Gilded" trophies: Don't forget that Paltrow has had some of the biggest homeruns of her career in period pieces. Her take on Jane Austen's "Emma" was a breakout and "Shakespeare In Love" brought her an Oscar. Academies behind the Emmy and Golden Globe awards would go nuts for a star like Paltrow on the small screen.

Costumes: Like she wouldn't slay the period wardrobe?

Cameos: GP's roster of famous pals could make for some amazing -- and unexpected -- walk-ons for the series. From Cameron Diaz, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Joaquin Phoenix to Jay-Z, Mario Batali, and Jerry Seinfeld. Think of the sweeps possibilities.

Family friendly: "Downton" has an ambitious scale. Even with Paltrow leading a new series, scheduling wouldn't be nearly as demanding as that of a feature film, leaving her time for husband Chris Martin and their kids, Apple and Moses. They also have homes in Los Angeles, and Long Island, New York, should locations be on either coast.
