Then: Young Mayim Bialik crossed paths with one of the biggest pop stars of the ‘80s — and one of her personal favorites — in a trendy section of Bialik’s hometown of L.A. “Where many girls who grew up in the early 1980s wanted to be Madonna, I wanted to be the quirky eclectic Cyndi Lauper,” Bialik tells Yahoo. “She represented non-conformity at a time when I was just learning what that even meant, and she was groundbreaking and lovely and unique. I think she was a wonderful role model for me as a young girl and for so many quirky girls.”

She adds, “I saw my share of celebrities growing up in the ‘70s and ‘80s on Melrose (I lived between Fairfax and La Brea near the Johnny Rockets from ages 5-15), but the day that my brother ran into the house and said, ‘Get down to [surplus store] WarBabies, Cyndi Lauper is there RIGHT NOW!!’ has to be the best.”

It would be another year or two before Bialik began to pop up in episodes of shows like “The Facts of Life” and in movies like “Beaches.” It would be four years before audiences would come to love her as the floppy hat-wearing title character in the ‘90s series “Blossom.”

Now: Bialik emerged from childhood stardom unscathed … better even! She earned her Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA in 2007, but continues to act. On Sunday, the mom of two and advocate of attached parenting stunned on the red carpet of the 2014 Golden Globes as she supported her current show, “The Big Bang Theory,” a nominee for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy. The crowd was full of celebs from TV and movies that the young Mayim would have enjoyed, but after more than 25 years in the biz, we imagine that star sightings are probably a little less exciting!
