A-Line: Celebrity StyleZooey Deschanel: Don’t Call Me ‘Quirky’
Whether she's starring in the sweet movie "(500) Days of Summer," or belting out cutesy, catchy folk tunes with pop duo She & Him, Zooey Deschanel is the indie "it" girl of the moment. And just like the women before her who have created signature looks (remember Winona Ryder's cropped haircut and angst-ridden expression?), Zooey has developed her own unique style: a wardrobe that's retro, whimsical, and very Urban Outfitters all at once.
In the April issue of Lucky, the 31-year-old describes it as "girly, flirtatious, colorful ... feminine, maybe, and soft. But yeah, definitely colorful. Maybe I won't dress like Alice in Wonderland in five or 10 years," she adds. "Maybe it'll be a more sophisticated version of that. But puffed sleeves -- I'll always like those."
Although critics often label her look as being "quirky," Zooey disagrees. "It's an annoying word," explains the multi-talented actress. "'Quirky' is like a nice way of saying weird."
Regardless, the brunette realizes some of her fashion choices are a bit offbeat, but her love affair with unconventional clothing began way back when she was still in school. "I wanted to be really girly, like Dorothy from the 'Wizard of Oz,'" she notes. "I'm still the same way." The "Elf" star recalls being 14 and really wanting a fancy party dress, so she made one. "I was just determined. So I found all this old material from Christmas stockings, and I taught myself how to sew," she says. "It had white lace at the top and an Empire waist, and it was knee length -- it was actually really cute."
Needless to say, the actress was in couture heaven while filming her latest role in the medieval comedy-adventure "Your Highness," with James Franco and Natalie Portman. Zooey plays maiden Belladonna in the flick that hits theaters April 8. "I had so many amazing costumes in the movie," she reveals. "It was really fun dressing up like I was going to a Renaissance fair for three months."
