If you still think of Katharine McPhee as the cutesy "American Idol" runner-up from several seasons back, well, it's time to take another look.

The singer and actress, now 28, appears in the March issue of GQ looking more sexpot than sweetheart, clad in lingerie and giving alluring looks while sitting in a bathtub. The spread, and accompanying interview, is part of McPhee's push to promote her leading role in heavily hyped new NBC drama "Smash," also starring Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. The series (which premieres Monday, February 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT) is set behind-the-scenes of a burgeoning Broadway production to give viewers a look inside the cut-throat audition process of a big-budget musical (in this case, one where McPhee's character is up for the lead role of Marilyn Monroe against a woman played by real-life stage star Megan Hilty).

With its Broadway musical theme and the cast breaking into the occasional song, some have wondered if the show can garner a male audience. In her GQ interview, McPhee insists the answer is yes.

"Listen," she says, "I go see all the guy movies, so now I know I love them. But you have to be open to it. I would say to the girlfriends out there: Just nail him down, make him watch an episode with you," she says. "I can understand why guys wouldn't be into 'Glee.' You know, that's a pretty heavy musical show. That show does, like, six songs in an episode. We'll do, at most, three."
