Heidi Klum: Split From Seal Was a ‘Curveball’

After Heidi Klum and Seal announced in January they were splitting after seven years of marriage, the couple asked for privacy, yet he talked about the breakup during practically every interview he gave in the days following. As for the "Project Runway" host, she has remained mum — until now. In the April issue of Elle, Klum finally opens up about the end of her marriage to the Grammy-winning singer, her new life as a single mom of four, and the "only thing" she cares about.

When discussing her split from Seal, Klum notes that it seemed to come out of nowhere to the public because we only saw their good side, like them renewing their vows each year on their anniversary. But while she doesn't go into detail as to what the public was not privy to, she does acknowledge that their breakup was "a curveball" to her. "Instead of something straight that you catch, it hits you in the head from the side that you didn't expect," Klum tells the magazine.

And it seems to have hit her hard. Klum, 38, adds that she has tried to shield herself from the press frenzy that followed and the reports about who did what to whom during their union. She reveals she didn't even leave her house the first week because she felt like she was "in the eye of the tornado." She explains: "It's emotions inside of your body that are a tornado. And then the outside world doing all this craziness—with you wanting it or not wanting it—is another tornado. But as hard as it is, so is life … Every couple goes through things. Unfortunately, we're in the public, so the highs are out there. But I don't think it's necessary — especially for our children — to have the lows being printed in magazines and talked about."

For now, Klum is keeping her focus on her children — Leni, 7, Henry, 6, Johan, 5, and Lou, 2 — who she says make her feel most beautiful. Although she's constantly told "you look amazing" when at work in the modeling world, she says it's her little ones who she can count on to always be honest with her. "The kids don't edit anything. When they kiss you and tell you they love you and say, 'Mama, you're the best' — that's really the only thing you care about."
