Gilles Mendel of J. Mendel designed a billowing black and blue strapless gown for the mom-to-be to wear. Rumors of Heidi's pregnancy spread when sketches of the dress -- altered to accommodate a baby bump -- were leaked a few weeks ago.

In spite of the early preview, all eyes were on Heidi as she hit the red carpet at the Costume Gala. The event served as opening night for this year's special exhibition, titled "The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion." The exhibit highlights over 50 years of famous fashion and faces. On display are haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces, photographs, and video testimonials from industry icons. "The Model as Muse" closes on August 9, 2009, so be sure to strut your way to the Met before it does.

In honor of the event and exhibit, Modelinia has deemed May History of Modelsmonth. If you're as fascinated with the modeling industry as I am, check out its evolution from the pinups of the 1920s to the supermodels of 1980s and 90s.
